Salt Lake City saw some serious surprises as full-fledged FMX competition resumed this weekend on the AST Dew Tour. Blake "Bilko" Williams, 2007 champ Nate Adams, and Swiss sensation Mathieu Rebeaud lead the tour coming into the Toyota Challenge, but – as if to prove how unpredictable FMX competition really is – none of them made the podium.
Instead, the weekend belonged to Adam Jones. He dominated both Prelims and Finals competition at the Toyota Challenge, and now holds the overall lead in the race for the Dew Cup, with 165 total points. Jones was the only rider to disrupt Nate Adams’ quest for an undefeated season last year, winning in Portland and finishing in 2nd place overall in 2007. Still, he’s had a shaky year in competition so far in 2008, and nobody was more surprised to see him on top in Salt Lake City than himself.

“I’m feeling spectacular, would probably be a pretty good word. Wonderful. Magnificent,” said Jones, struggling to make sense of it all immediately after the competition. “I definitely feel good. It’s been a while since I’ve felt like I’m on top of my game, and I’m definitely feeling like that right now, so it gives me a lot of confidence going into Orlando for the next event. I’ve had some bad events this year and been low on confidence, so I needed this.”It was an entirely new podium crowd in Salt Lake, with Adam Jones, Robbie Maddison, and Jeremy Lusk on top, with Panasonic Open winners Blake Williams, Nate Adams, and Mat Rebeaud nowhere to be seen. That shakes up the contest for the Dew Cup considerably as the tour heads into its final stop next month in Orlando for the PlayStation Pro. |
Among this weekend’s surprises and disappointments: Mat Rebeaud crashed in practice the day before Finals, injuring his back. Word is he’ll be okay, but missing Finals gave him a 10th place finish for the Toyota Challenge and bumps him down from 3rd to 6th place in the overall standings. Rebeaud dominated the international X-Fighters competition this year and had hoped to add some Dew Tour glory to his growing list of accomplishments.

Crowd favorite Nate Adams wiped out in his first Finals run, posting a score of 66.13 and missing his 2nd run, to finish in 9th place. Word is he’ll be okay too, but the fall bumps him down from 2nd to 4th place in the overall standings and makes his dream of a Dew Tour repeat that much harder to achieve. |
Blake “Bilko” Williams won the Panasonic Open in Baltimore and was the overall points leader coming into Salt Lake City, but he took some bumps this weekend, too. Despite landing two spectacular 360 variations, he finished way down in 7th place after casing a couple of landings. That knocks him down to 2nd place overall, just 5 points behind Adam Jones. Dew Tour fans, we have a contest on our hands.

“A couple guys crashed but that’s just part of the sport, you know?” said Jones. “It sucks, and I never like to see my friends go down, but it happens. Luckily everybody’s going to walk away from this event. Well, Bilko’s gonna limp, but at least he’ll be on two feet. I’m really looking forward to Orlando now, because whatever happens it’s going to be exciting.” |
